why jaipur is called pink city

Jaipur is called the Pink City because of the distinctive pink-colored sandstone used in many of the buildings and structures in the old part of the city. This color was used to paint the buildings in the city in 1876, to welcome the arrival of the Prince of Wales and since then, the city has maintained its pink hue.

The idea of painting the city pink is said to have come from the then ruler of Jaipur, Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh II, who wanted to impress the visiting dignitaries with the unique and beautiful look of the city. The color pink was chosen as it symbolizes hospitality and was thought to be a welcoming color for guests.

Today, the pink color has become an integral part of the identity of Jaipur, and many buildings and structures in the city, including the famous Hawa Mahal and City Palace, continue to be painted in this distinctive color, attracting tourists from all over the world.
