why leaves are green in colour Leaves are green in color because they contain a pigment called chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is essential for the process of photosynthesis, which is how plants make their food. During photosynthesis, chlorophyll absorbs light energy from the sun and uses it to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose and oxygen. Chlorophyll is particularly good at absorbing blue and red light, but reflects green light, which is why leaves appear green to our eyes. While chlorophyll is the primary pigment responsible for leaf color, there are other pigments such as carotenoids and anthocyanins that contribute to leaf coloration as well. These pigments become more visible when chlorophyll breaks down in the fall, resulting in the colorful autumn foliage that we see in some parts of the world.
