Il common law marriage

Common law marriage is a type of unofficial union that develops when a pair cohabitates and portrays themselves as a married couple to others without actually getting married or applying for a marriage licence. In other words, even though the marriage was not established formally, it is one that is recognised by the law.

Depending on the jurisdiction, several conditions must be met for a common law union, but normally the following are necessary:

A specified amount of time—typically several years—must have passed since the pair first moved in together.

They must have presented themselves as a married pair to others.

They must have had marriage in mind.
